“This is a mistake,” she said, her voice low and steady, projecting a confidence she absolutely did not feel. “Walk away now, and I won’t report this to station security.”
The man in front of her chuckled, a harsh, ugly sound. “The Captain thinks she’s in a position to negotiate.”
He lunged.
Rory was ready. She dropped low, sweeping his legs out from under him. As he fell, she drove her elbow hard into the side of another attacker who was rushing in. But she was hopelessly outnumbered. A third man grabbed her from behind, pinning her arms. The one she had tripped scrambled to his feet, rage in his eyes, and drew back a fist.
Suddenly, a high-pitched shriek ...
And then, it happened.
A figure burst through the cascade, shattering the liquid wall as if it were glass. He was magnificent. A Birdman. The Birdman. Water streamed from his powerful, muscled body, his skin slick and glistening in the sun. His sandy-blond hair was plastered to his head, and the loose, white linen pants he wore were soaked, clinging to the hard curves of his thighs and hips. His wings, immense and powerful, beat with a slow, deliberate rhythm that held him effortlessly in the air, a mere two meters in front of her.
He was breathtaking. Not just handsome, but a raw, elemental force of nature. Rory’s own breath caught in her throat, her heart hammering against her ribs. A flutter of butterflies—no, a whole flock of them—erupted deep inside her, a startling, unfamiliar sensation that left her feeling …
She was halfway up the mountain when the world exploded.
A deafening roar ripped through the night, followed by a violent, bone-jarring impact that threw the gondola violently up in the air. Rory was slammed against the far wall, her head cracking against a metal support beam. The world dissolved into a sickening lurch and the horrifying shriek of tearing metal.
When her vision cleared, the gondola was swinging wildly from side to side like a pendulum on a broken clock. One entire side of the compartment was gone, ripped away by the force of the blast, revealing a terrifying, gaping hole into the night sky. The wind howled through the opening, cold and sharp. The gondola was hanging by only a few frayed, sparking strands of …
An intense, needle-thin beam of laser light, invisible to the naked eye, shot from the front of the canister. It struck a two-inch-thick plate of reinforced durasteel that had been propped up against the far wall. For a second, nothing happened. Then, a perfect, glowing orange circle appeared on the metal’s surface. With a soft, hissing sizzle, a molten plug of metal dropped to the floor, leaving a clean, perfectly circular hole through the plate.
The figure clicked the remote again, and the humming stopped. He stepped back into the shadows, his face unseen, his satisfaction a palpable presence in the silent room. He looked from the silently smoking hole in the metal, to the harmless-looking device on the table.
A low, chilling whisper, devoid of all emotion, echoed in the darkness.
“This will be quite the encore…
She leaned into his hand, her eyes fluttering shut, and it was all the encouragement he needed. His mouth found hers, and this time there was no anger, no desperation of a stolen moment in a cargo bay. This was a deep, knowing kiss, a rediscovery of a familiar territory. It was slow and searching at first, a question and an answer, and then it deepened, ignited by the spark of memory into a hungry, consuming fire.
Her hands tangled in his hair, pulling him closer, as if she could erase the seven years of distance that had separated them. His arms wrapped around her, lifting her off her feet, and he carried her a few steps to the bed. Clothes were shed with a desperate, frantic haste, obstacles to be discarded ...
